Need a VAN

Flexibility is key and we offer plenty of it. Here are some options:

Own outright

Owning outright is likely to be the best option if you want to reduce your weekly costs and improve your chances of exposure and high earnings. However, it typically has the highest upfront cost as you have to purchase the vehicle all at once.

If you have a lump sum of money you can invest in purchasing your vehicle and envisage being part of the #MobileBicycleMechanics franchise for the next few years, this is likely to be the cheapest option.

It’s fine to buy a second-hand mobile unit - and these can be cheaper than buying a brand new one. However, you should be confident in the condition of the van and be sure that it will last you as well as being an eligible van that will be accepted by our #MobileBicycleMechanics App. It’s also worth checking to see if the vehicle will be impacted by any charges, such as charges into Ultra Low Emissions Zones, which some cities are introducing.

Vehicle requirements in the UK

Which van is right for you? Make sure it meets CYCLEDELIK van requirements in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol and other cities in the UK, and remember that you’ll make more money if you keep your costs low.

Your vehicle must-haves

Model year 5 years or less than any current year or new for London and 10 years or or less than any current year or new for everywhere else in the UK

Minivan or High roof van green or white

Good condition with no cosmetic damage

CYCLEDELIK branding in black against white for specialist mobile units and white against green for anything else

All vehicles must comply with low emission regulations

Electric option is preferred

Additional London vehicle policies and conditions apply

TfL Age & Condition Policy:

Vehicles included are:

Small vans (weighing up to and including 1.205 tonnes unladen weight)

Larger vans, (over 1.205 tonnes unladen weight up to and including 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight)

Minimum emission standards

Petrol: Euro 4

Diesel: Euro 6

The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age, however:

All new diesel vans sold from September 2016 should meet the Euro 6 standard

All petrol vans registered with the DVLA from January 2006 meet the Euro 4 standard

Check your vehicle registration document to see your vehicle's Euro emission standard or NOx emissions. If these are not listed then use TFL ULEZ vehicle checker.

Financing

One way to purchase a vehicle is on finance. Typical finance deals will allow you to own a vehicle whilst paying for it monthly over a 3-5 year period.

Generally, you pay a deposit up front and then a monthly payment to the financing company. At the end of the period, you own the vehicle fully. It avoids needing a large amount of cash up front but can also be an economic way of owning a vehicle.

One potential barrier is that many financing companies require you to have a minimum credit score - and if your credit score is low they will either charge a high deposit and higher interest rate, or not offer finance at all. You’ll also need to sign a contract that will commit you to paying the monthly payment and following their terms.

Flexi-Lease

Flexi-leasing and flexi-buy, also known as Rent to Buy, are halfway between a finance product and a rental or lease product. They allow you to own the vehicle at the end of the finance period (typically 3 years), but also allow you to return the product (like a rental) if it’s not working out for you. Because of this additional flexibility, it is a more expensive option than financing. There are companies that offer these to CYCLEDELIK partner-mechanics because of the appeal of flexibility. Some offers include insurance, maintenance and servicing as well as licensing the vehicle.

They also tend to offer deals to those with lower credit ratings - and so if this is an issue, then worth checking it out.

What is the difference? Flexi-Buy is a hire-purchase agreement where you keep the van at the end of the contract as don’t have to make a final lump sum payment (balloon payment); Flexi-Lease has a lower weekly payment, but you have the option to pay a lump-sum (balloon payment) at the end of the contract to own the vehicle otherwise you hand it back.

Leasing

An easy way to think of leasing is a long-term rental. You commit to a longer-term contract that you cannot break (usually from 6 months up to 3 years) and the vehicle comes with servicing and maintenance. Insurance is usually offered also.

Leasing is a great way to reduce the weekly costs when compared to renting without committing to owning a vehicle. It’s also great for those that like driving a new van and would like to trade in their vehicle for a new van every few years. Although this of course means that you always have to make leasing payments as you never own the car at the end of the contract with a long-term lease.

Rental*

Rental is the most flexible option - some providers in the market will rent with the minimum commitment of a week. They will typically require a deposit (around £250-500) and generally charge every week, for the week ahead. Many rental vans include insurance and maintenance, so in most cases that is one extra cost you will not need to account for.

We regularly survey partners to understand how much they are paying in the market. A typical Crafter, slightly used (1-3 years), is on average about £250pw. However, there are cheaper vehicles in the market if you look to go for non-Hybrids like the Peugeot boxer or Ford transit as low as £185pw (including insurance).

Renting can be a good option for anyone new to #MobileBicycleMechaincs who wants to try it out. However, if you are enjoying it, you can look to move to owning / financing as this will mean you are paying less for your vehicle and will be better off in the long term.

*Renting a van does not have to be fully kitted out and the mobile bicycle mechanic partner may operate from the van for smaller jobs and collect and return for bigger jobs. Vans must not be branded. Higher deposits and costs are associated with rentals to cover our business costs in keeping the highest level of service for our customer. Google customer reviews:

"Superb customer service and professional work carried out by Rachid and his team. I'm glad I was introduced to them by a local friend when he said Cycledelik are one of the best in Acton.

They've taken great care and delicate work with my bikes over the years and I routinely ask them for help and a MOT-like service to ensure they're running optimally and at their best.

I also requested them to build a bespoke mountain bike a while back and they did it effortlessly and without any problems by coming to me without any surprises or unexpected premiums. No complaints and I haven't been let down by them so far. Keep up the good work, Cycledelik."

"I have been using Cycledelik for over two years now and belong to one of their membership schemes. My bikes are scheduled for frequent check ups and are kept in the best condition which minimizes issues while on the road. However, when something does go wrong the team is very flexible and reliable to help you out. They come on site to where you are and carry a wide stock of bike parts to quickly get your riding again.

I think the best part of this is that they come to you. So when I commute to work they can visit my office to replace a flat. They also come to my home in greater London to carry out service on the whole families bikes.

The value of the membership has paid for itself many times over in convenience alone. Plus service is always with a smile."

"Always helpful, prompt and professional - we have a cargo trike that gets good care"

Freeindex customer reviews:

"Communicative, friendly, knowledgeable service. Right on time and quickly repaired and serviced my bike. Will definitely use again."

"Absolutely brilliant service. On time, knowledgeable and so helpful. Great work on my knackered bike. Mended my gears, fitted a new seat and did thorough safety check. Back on the road in no time. Thank you so much."
